How many calories break the fast?

I usually drink black coffee until early in the afternoon but also like to drink soda. I prefer Mtn Dew Zero which does not have an impact on blood sugar. However, it’s kinda hard to come by in my area, so I buy Diet Mtn Dew instead, which has 1ish calorie were can. How many cans can I have before my body stops acting like I’m fasting?

In the strictest sense, any calories breaks a fast. In theory, for most folks, somewhere in the realm of 50 calories will be enough to boot you out of whatever state you were in. But there’s no exact number for each and every body.

My general rule is if you’re fasting to achieve specific physiological states for health reason, stick to just water. If you’re fasting primarily as a caloric reduction, almost any unsweetened or artificially sweetened drink is worth it if it gets you to your next meal without eating.

Also note that your black coffee technically has a few calories, so if that’s working for you then the Diet Mtn Dew isn’t going to be that different.

However personally, as a previous heavy diet soda drinker, especially Diet Mt Dew. I felt I had a much easier go cutting it out mostly. It really helped my hunger cravings and reset my tastes to not expect everything to be so sweet. Maybe something to try.

Answer

A sweet taste, even with no calories, can cause your body to release insulin. When insulin is circulating, your body is trying to store food energy as fat, so it cannot access body fat for energy. If you’re trying to burn body fat, avoid anything sweet or with food-like flavours during your fast.
