Inaccurate Blood Glucose Readings?

I’ve been fasting for several months, rolling 72s. For the first time, I decided to check my blood glucose with a CVS monitor. Yesterday as I was around 36 hours into a fast, I did a reading and my BG was 107! This scared me because I am only 20 and my BMI is only slightly higher than average. I tested again and it came out 120, then a few hours later it came out as 99. The first two were within 15 minutes of each other. How is my blood sugar this high while fasting? Am I prediabetic already??

Answer

When you are fasting and/or eating Keto, your blood glucose numbers go up. When you dont eat you wont trigger insulin which moves glucose out of your blood supply. If you are concerned a dr can test your A1c.

Answer

Your strips could be highly variable. I have been testing my blood glucose for a while now. The strips I have bought before have been very consistent, even when I didn’t like my numbers. However, I recently bought strips and when I took my blood glucose 3 hours post, I was at 122!. Shocked, I waited a few minutes and I was at 113. On the same pricked finger with the same blood, I tested with another strip, 106.

So, there is a variance, not sure how much. But the numbers aren’t 100 percent. I think it can be up on down by 10 points. Also, like others have suggested, to get a better understanding on what is happening, asking for your A1c, and if you really want to know, also getting a fasting insulin test, will show you how well your insulin is being managed over a span of time. Not just one moment in time.
