Is it bad to lift weights during a fast?

Currently half way through a 3 day fast and noticed I struggled through my usual workout. Should I wait before exercising?

Answer

You need to be fat adapted to do well with working out when fasting. Fat adaptation takes a period of 6 weeks they’ve studied on athletes.

You can train, especially on low calorie workouts like gym sessions (as opposed to ridiculous calorie intensive training like cycling), but you should go high rep, lower weight for now, and rework your way up.

This doesn’t mean you’ve lost muscle or strength, it just means your body isn’t capable of producing the energy required for that higher intensity with current energy availability. The power or (strength in your case) will return after refeeding.

Answer

I do my most intense workouts during my 72 hour fast every week.I will lost 25% more fat on top of the fat loss through fasting and my muscle mass has steadily gone up by about 1% every month. However, if I had a party and drank alcohol before I start fasting it screws up my energy for the rest of the week and I take it slow, just listen to your body.
