Psyllium Husk (basically pure fiber) during a fast?

Hi all,

I guess the title says it all, but I’ve recently started adding psyllium husk to my diet and have (subjectively) found major benefits in terms of digestive health.

Since psyllium husk seems to consist mostly of fiber, I’m wondering if a serving or two during the first two days of any fast as well as an hour or two before a refeed would break the fast and inhibit autophagy / keto? Asking because I tend to have diarrhea after a 24h+ fast (no matter what I refeed with, it just happens), as well as mild constipation during the first 24-48h.

The way I see it, this could help not only with cleansing / purging the gut during the fast, but also to prime the gut to start receiving food at the end of a fast, potentially reducing the shock?

Am I on to something or would taking in psyllium husk negate the effects of a fast?

Answer

I use it for the reasons you state. It does not provide nutrients to your body so much as feeds your gut bacteria.

Dr. Fung writes that most fasting is not derailed by low fat, low protein foods up to a few hundred calories. Psyllium has almost nothing. I add a tablespoon to about 8-12 oz of water or about a pint. No big deal.

Oh my god dude, youre saying it causes you not to get the shits???? i am a woman and i have instant diarrhea 24 hrs into a fast, no matter what.

How good is it? Like does it help stop the piss diarrhea or does it just make it only slightly more firm?
