What does "eating like you regularly do" imply?

In some fasting techniques like Eat Stop Eat the instructions tells you to “eat like you regularly do” from time to time depending on the technique. I love eating and my portions are very big and unhealthy. Alot of times i refill my plate. It seems unreasonable to keep eating that way even though it is my “regular” sized meal. In my case, should i continue eating like i regularly do?

I think this is a flaw of Eat Stop Eat, which was generally otherwise a good book. It’s been awhile since I read the book, but basically he is trying to say “eat maintenance calories” and “don’t compensate for the fast by eating more.” He can’t say “maintenance calories” because he’s trying to tell you that you don’t need to count calories if you follow his method.

But if “eating normally” has been causing you to gain weight, then you can’t just “eat normally” after your fast. And “don’t compensate for the fast by eating more” is tougher than he would have you believe in the book because your body knows that you have been fasting.

In time, your results will tell you if it’s working or not.

In your case, I would start with eating healthier and less of it. And then ease into fasting. The success with fasting for me was to change the way I thought about food and not panic eat when I got hungry. For me, cutting out snacks was the first step, then portion control (eating only until I was full) and then start cutting a meal here and there. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Try stick to small portions after fasting or you’re going to have terrible carb crashes, glucose spikes and other nasty side effects. Just eat till you’re no longer hungry or the hunger pangs subside. Don’t force food into your body that you don’t need just to clear the plate or because it’s tastes nice. Small (or regular size) portions is the key to shifting lots of weight when combined with fasting. If you eat massive portions and eat till you feel sick then you’re not going to see as many benefits. Maybe try keto for a few days after a fast too, before going back to your regular (but more sensible) foods.
