What is the current consensus on brown rice?

I am a fan of Dr Mark Hyman and he referred to it in a negative fashion in a recent podcast episode (can’t remember which one). I also saw some negative comments about how white rice, contrary to popular belief, is actually healthier than brown rice.

Has the science changed? Is brown rice no longer considered a healthy staple? Does it cause insulin resistance or something? I just want to make sure I’m not missing something…

Answer

What you’re missing is that Dr Mark Hyman is a bit of a quack. Brown rice is still healthy.

Answer

Wow lots of incorrect answers.

The reason why he warns about brown rice is it’s arsenic content which is in the hull primarily.

If you have rice everyday I’d stick to white. If you have rice a couple times a week and prefer brown it’s probably fine.

Answer

I used to eat brown rice at home all the time, but made sure it was California grown, not Texas because arsenic was used in the fields in the past for cotton farming.

But I just switched back to white rice because I get plenty of fiber in my diet otherwise, and the nutrients in brown rice can easily be found in other foods. The levels of arsenic are probably not going to harm anyone as long as they’re not eating it every meal of the year.

Even so I decided that brown rice wasn’t adding anything to special to my nutrition and it was too chewy and slightly bitter tasting.
