Working out early in the morning: How to adapt?

Hi all! I’ve been fasting for 5 or so years, always working out after work, before eating dinner. Fasting window 16:8, breaking it during lunch at 12 and eating my last meal around 19:00/20:00 after the workout.

Now I am forced to workout early in the morning, at 7:00. I have stopped fasting but I miss it too much. I’ve read that it’s actually fine to not eat right after a workout, but I was wondering if others follow the same schedule.

Would it be fine to:

I think it depends on your goals and type of exercise. If you want to do powerlifting or get into body building probably not the best way. I was big into powerlifting and I noticed a considerable difference in strength and ability when I tried fasted.

Now I do more cardio based exercise like cycling and running and I really like doing those fasted. I think for cycling about 25-30 miles I can top off in the morning without eating and feel good. Any more and I start to feel it. Running I just suck at so I’m not running far enough to worry about feeding myself during

This is exactly what I did when I started. Miss breakfast. Workout in the morning. Have lunch at 1300. Continue with work. Get home and have dinner before 2000 / 2100. 16 - 17 hour fast. Easy.

Now because of my schedule I do the same but I workout at 1800 and then straight into dinner at 2000. If I have the time at work I’ll still do a light stretch or core workout over lunch as well.

Merry Christmas 😊

I do fasted cardio, Orangetheory. Those workouts are intense and burn about 450 cal. This was actually a gateway for me to start doing 16:8 intermittent fasting because I was already doing fasted cardio prior to adopting a 6 PM to 10 AM fasting schedule. The way that I’ve changed things up since starting fasting in the mornings is that now I try to work out at nine or 9:30 AM (I have a flexible job) so I can eat immediately after my workout. That is unlikely an option for most people, so I just advise to stick with the early morning workout and drink tons of water afterward so that you can hold off until an early lunch time to eat.

I also break my fast each afternoon with a smoothie.

I am going to deviate a bit with the crowd on this, however, to admit that my workouts are not necessarily as good when I don’t eat a protein bar before working out. A few times a week when the workout is going to be aggressive, I will eat a protein bar at nine before a 9:30 AM workout. This means I will have fasted for 14 or 15 hours depending on when I finished dinner the night before. Invariably, I’m stronger & faster during those workouts. It’s a trade-off between longer fast & better workout. I listen to my body. I think people will tell you that your body will adjust, but frankly mine hasn’t. On the other hand, if I’m not working out in the morning, it’s super easy for me to wait to eat until noon.
