Alcohol while intermittent fasting

Hello all, I’m so glad I joined this sub. I started my IF journey before my wedding and it’s so motivational!

I am wondering how you all handle alcohol when it comes to IF. I don’t drink often but on occasions I will drink and I start my fast at 5:30PM and break it at 9:30PM and usually move it forward a few hours on weekends to accommodate later nights.

Is it possible to drink alcohol with 0 calories such as Nudes, Whiteclaws, Nutrl while im outside of my eating window?

Answer

There is no alcohol with 0 calories and any and all forms will break your fast. That being said, if you’re going to have the occasional night out on the town just do it and move on with your usual schedule the next day. That’s how I roll about once a month and it works for me.

The effects of alcohol on fasting are kind of wild.

It’s complicated. How the liver behaves, how and under what conditions useable fatty acids are provided as usable energy to your cells, what it does to any ketosis underway processing body fat, etc. I took the time to understand it once, but that’s all gone now. You can research away if you like.

Bottom line, alcohol, even “0 calorie” alcoholic drinks, are bad for your fast. How bad? Well, you would have to try and find out.

I often will have a unit (1.5oz) of scotch outside of my windows and without counting the calories. Always within the first 3 hours of my fast. It doesn’t seem to have any effect. YMMV.

While I am practicing IF/OMAD for weightloss, I also want this to be my lifestyle. I don’t have an issue with alcohol consumption. I’ve had issues with overeating. Wtbs, changing the way/time I eat, is about food. So, if I want a cocktail, or glass of wine, I have it. But, it’s always with dinner during my feeding window. I am still losing weight/inches. The goal, is to make sustainable changes. Have what you like, in moderation. Alcohol contains carbs. The alcohol itself isn’t the big problem, it’s what you mix in it. Look up keto-friendly alcoholic beverages. That way, you’ll have an idea of drinks lower in carbs and sugar. It’ll help you, greatly. Best wishes.
