Damn gout...

To repeat the title: damn gout, it is throwing a monkey wrench on my fasting. It is really causing flareups every time that I fast for 24+ hours. I figure that as I drop the weight and clean my diet that eventually it will go away but damn; the mother fucker is really interfering with things right now.

The doctor gave me colchicine which is just a fancy anti-inflammatory. Today I’m making a follow up appointment to see if I can get Allopurinol, which is meant to actually lower uric acid levels and thus prevent (as opposed to treat) gout attacks.

Does anybody here has experience with gout issues while fasting, and specifically with taking Allopurinol or any of the other uric acid reducing medz?

Answer

My husband has taken Allopurinol daily for years and hasn’t had a gout flare-up since he started. He’s never done a prolonged fast, so I can’t speak to that, but he’s always gravitated toward OMAD. The doc who prescribed the Allopurinol is an IF advocate who was the first physician to approve of my husband’s OMAD tendencies, so I’m guessing Allopurinol + fasting is a fine combo.

Answer

Uric acid builds up during fasting because the kidneys prioritize expelling ketones so if you’re prone to gout you’re going to get flareups.

The only real long term solution is to limit the purine-rich foods in your diet. Fasting obviously can help with that but if you’re still eating a lot of those foods when not fasting, then it’s just shooting yourself in the foot.
