I’ve been doing 16-8 IF for a few weeks and so far feeling great. I’m M, 155lbs, and don’t want to lose any weight. I’m following a low carb, high fat diet (but not strict keto) Currently doing fasting for overall health and in particular I’d love to have periods of the day when my body enters ketosis.
Has anyone measured their ketones on IF without a keto diet? Or anyone hoping for a similar outcome?
I haven’t actually measured ketones, but I’ve certainly hit ketosis a few times with IF and not specifically keto based on the telltale signs like bad tastes, smells, and breath that could melt someone’s face off.
But usually this still involved some inadvertent very low carb meals back to back. I don’t think you can typically reach it on just a 16 hour fast.
For me, a 16 hour fasting window is not long enough to get into ketosis unless I’m doing strict keto. I measure my ketones with a blood meter. I’m doing ADF now and I find that it takes me about 24 hours to get above .5 ketones. I’ve been doing keto for a while, eating less than 30g of carbs a day. Initially when I was on keto, I got much higher ketone readings. I guess my body has become more efficient so my ketone readings are lower unless I fast for 24+ hours.
No keto here, but typically do OMAD. I measure with a breath analyzer that took a few weeks to start having non-zero measurements after 18-20 hours of fasting. Now typically I’m in levels between “slight ketosis” and “stable fat burning zone” at that point These correspond to acetone breath levels around 5-15ppm.
The highest I’ve ever seen so far in the latter stages of a 48 hour fast, where I got up to 39ppm. This meter gives a warning track at 40ppm and a ketoacidosis warning above 60ppm.
I’m really surprised that these cheap meters are really able to give meaningful measurements.
