I’m 4 days into my fast. Last night I started getting sick. It’s not keto flu or related to the fast. Over the weekend my boyfriend and I visited his grandma in the hospital, so I’m sure I picked something up there because I work from home and have a low immune system.
Anyway, I’ve been getting mixed google results about whether fasting helps or hinders healing. It makes sense that it would help, since we naturally grow tired and decrease in appetite when we get sick. digestion takes so much energy so if we’re not using it, we can heal more quickly. At least that’s what most of the articles I’m reading are saying, and it makes sense.
Has anyone fasted while sick before? Did it make a difference? Did you feel worse breaking your fast to eat? I’m not hungry and don’t feel the desire to break my fast.
Thanks!
You make antibodies from proteins and immunity will eventually decrease on an extended fast. I’m honestly not sure at what point immunity starts decreasing though. That would be something to look into. I personally would switch to something like bone broth for a few days and then continue fasting once better.
I would wait until you’ve fully recovered and are well nourished, then fast. Fasting will weaken your immune system during the fast, then enhance your immune system after you refeed. Good luck, and get well soon!
I am on day 4 myself and have been battling a bit or a cold/sinus infection. Nothing terrible so I’m continuing to fast cuz it’s always cold season where I live. But basically im just going with what my body tells me at this point. I am getting a tab bit nauseated from post nasal drip but other than that, I have been feeling better each day. Feel better!
I would make sure you’ve got plenty of electrolytes and break the fast, and make sure you’ve got good support in terms of Vit D3 + K2, and minerals like magnesium, zinc, and so on. Fasting while ill, or feeling ill for any reason, is a bad idea in my opinion.
