Answer

Definitely not going to break your fast, but pay attention to how it makes you feel. Caffeine affects my gut motility too much to drink it on an extended fast, and I honestly tried very hard to find absolutely anything to blame it on other than caffeine, because I really love green tea with turmeric and ginger while I’m fasting, but alas… the tea had to go.

Answer

Not at all! Herbal, black teas, and black coffee are 100% FINE. Just be sure you aren’t adding ANY sweetening agents (even if they are calorie free) and that your tea doesn’t have added sweeteners.

And even Doctor Fung says that a tablespoon of heavy cream is fine in your coffee!

I drink herbal teas (and rarely black coffee unless it’s cold brewed) doing my fasts if I get bored of water.

Answer

If you were extremely strict, yes: the microscopic leaves in tea provide carbs and calories. That is in insanely low numbers. However, no it does not really break a fast and offers so many benefits compared to not drinking Tea.

Answer

Unsweet tea is what gets me through my fasts and guarantees that I have high enough water intake (I get bored of just plain water very fast).

Also, you can add a pinch of salt to your green tea to change the flavor profile in a good way. The salt kinda “cancels out” the bitter flavor components and heightens the sweeter notes

Answer

It’s your fast! You decide. Depends on the reasons for fasting. If you’re fasting for digestive health, I think you want to limit to nothing but water. I have decaf coffee on my fast. My reason for fasting is to stimulate autophagy

Answer

I drink green, black and herbal on my fasts. No issues. Sometimes I’ll add salt, sometimes not. In addition I also make “broth” which is just hot water, lo salt, dried herbs/seasonings and maybe some magnesium. It’s nice to have variation.

In the colder months it feels great. The hotter months? I haven’t really figured out a beverage combination that works just as well especially since I’m not a fan of cold tea.
