Has weight loss caused strength loss?

I’ve been on a 2MAD and lately OMAD diet for 11+ months and have lost about 20kgs. I’ve lost weight as slowly as possible and also started newly lifting weights in the gym during that time. Initially things were going well and I was almost doubling my strength every few months but then it stagnated and eventually even lowered a bit. It has somehow finally started to pick back up very slowly. My strength numbers are nowhere near impressive since I’m just a noobie with average genes but since it’s been almost a year I expected to be a bit stronger. Anyone else here who has had a similar experience? I just expected to grow a lot stronger since noobie gains and all but my deadlift squat and bench numbers are still very bad.

Answer

In broad terms, mass moves mass. Powerlifters are generally as heavy as their weight class allows them to be. In my personal experience, my strength did decrease as I lost weight. I could still work up to whatever PR, but it would take longer. Also, the number of reps I could in a typical workout decreased as well.
