Bought Swiss Miss No Added Sugar hot chocolate packets. 21g per serving. Brought it home and compared it to my Swiss Miss hot chocolate K cups- 19g serving.
Kcup- 70 cals, 14g carbs, 12g sugars
No Added Sugar- 80 cals, 15g carbs, 11g sugars
So, what would be the impetus for buying the NSA hot chocolate? Obviously, I didn’t realize it would actually be worse, considering the artificial sweeteners, than the one with sugar listed as the first ingredient.

No. Ultra processed food isn’t as good as more complete/less processed food.Chocolate is probably the easiest to get cheap ans high quality.Calorically sugar free may be lower but it doesn’t make it healthy.
Artificial sweeteners are always better than sugar. There is literally nothing good and only bad about sugar. Taste is another story, but in terms of health the is no positive answer with sugar. There are also plenty good artificial sweeteners around. Having said that, once you eliminate sugars completely you will lose the addiction and the craving for the sweetness. This should naturally limit your desire and intake of all things sweet. My opinion. 🙂
Fake sugars give me diarrhea for an entire day so I stay clear away from them
YMMV but generally no sugar is the way to go, or just a bit of normal sugar. I stopped putting sugar in my tea and at first it tasted like ass but now it’s alright. Sugar doesn’t need replacing in everything
Refined and processed white sugar is harmful to begin with leading to insulin resistance but the alternative to these sucralose, acetal sulphame and many more are much more harmful as they maybe 0 caloric but have been shown to cause osteoporosis or even more harmful diseases in the long run.
I heard about some interesting research the other day on artificial sweeteners.
The upshot was that if you eat artificial sweeteners in combination with things that cause a glucose spike then your brain/body will begin to associate the taste of fake sugar with high blood glucose. That’s fine(-ish) if you’re actually getting glucose in your blood every single time you eat fake sugar, but it causes a huge problem if you eat fake sugar WITHOUT a source of carbs sometimes.
The issue is that you get an insulin spike without any actual glucose for the cells to store in response. They actually had to halt the study where they did that on purpose because the subjects were all becoming pre-diabetic.

Processed garbage is still processed garbage regardless if it’s sugar free or not. So we are basically having a conversation over which is worse where I think is a pointless conversation if we are talking about a food item you don’t consume regularly.
If you do consume it regularly the answer is usually to give it up regardless.
Also just because something is higher in calories doesn’t make it worse. That’s not an appropriate measure of the healthfulness of a food.
If you had homemade hot chocolate that used heavy cream and minimal to no added sugar, its probably more caloric than a low fat, high sugar hot chocolate, but it would be healthier.
Oooo my turn to get downvoted for suggesting that you simply try to cut sugar and sugar substitute products. Look at sugary things as occasional treats. With that in mind, don’t think you can simply enjoy the substitute regularly. The “sugar-free” product is trying to replicate junk food which you should try to avoid. Sure, black coffee or tea may not be as enjoyable as hot chocolate, but hot chocolate is like a dessert in a cup. Anyway, your Kcup with 12g sugar is not that big of a deal. 12g of sugar is about 1 Tablespoon (unless you also add marshmallows and who doesn’t?). My weekly 12 oz. Mountain Dew has 46g of sugar.
