Oat milk in morning coffee?

Hey guys! New to IF but really motivated after having read everyone’s stories. I plan on doing 16:8 and skipping breakfast. However I drink coffee every morning with a splash of oat milk and I have read different reports about this being “allowed” or not. What are your guys take on this?

Answer

Oat milk is caloric and will definitely break a fast. That said, I do 16/8 from 7pm to 11am on weekdays, and if I want to do a “dirty” 18/6 or 20/4, I have tea with oat milk at hour 16 to extend it. It’s not fasting per se but it’s still a way to reduce my caloric intake for a longer period.

Different people have different takes on this, but from a “harm reduction” pov, is there a higher fat/lower carb alternative you can turn to? (I assume you don’t drink heavy cream, but there are non dairy creamers I think.)

Answer

The ultimate goal is to reduce calories within a limited eating window. (Yes, I know about ketosis as well). I’m personally not a purist when it comes to IF and I have still gotten results. There was a time people put a whole stick of butter in their coffee (remember bulletproof coffee?) to lose weight but now a few drops of some milk is the ruination of a diet/lifestyle. I did read something somewhere that said less than 15 calories doesn’t break your fast. I wouldn’t sweat it as long as it isn’t sugary creamer.

What’s the harm of trying it for a week or two see what happens? Then try black the next week.

Answer

my first thought is that black coffee is good. Better coffee made with better methods with better water tastes so good black.

If you absolutely have to have the oat milk, OK. But you’re also blipping the radar when you were trying for total radio silence.

Answer

For me IF is more than just counting calories. It made me built up mental strength to control things. Earlier I was always big on snacking but controlling myself during my fast period gave me confidence I can cut out all unnecessary things from my life. While oatmilk might not have much calories but do you want to trade it for being honest over a 16 hour period
