OMAD for 6 weeks but HDL Cholesterol has gotten a lot worse/lower.

Has this happened to anyone else? I was diagnosed with fatty liver 6-8 weeks ago, since then I’ve been eating about 1000-1500 a day in generally 1 meal, all whole foods.

I got the results back from my first blood test since Feb and my good cholesterol HDL has plummited and I’m now in the “poor” category. 0.911mmol when it should be 1.25+, back when I was eating worst and in Feb it was in that range, I’m very worried that I might have the beginning of heart disease now but do not know why it’d have changed that much and that much to the worse in 8 months time.

Answer

You probably cut down your good fat intake by going OMAD. I eat at least 1 avocado a day and olives several times per week. During the Covid lockdowns my avocado/olive consumption plummeted for almost 3 years and my HDL went way down. I just kicked my avocado consumption so hoping my next panel shows improvement.

I’d suggest increasing your HDL raising fat intake.

Answer

You need to realize that bad foods still have all the nutrition you need. They enrich the food so you keep eating it without becoming malnourished or they wouldn’t have a business.

When you go whole foods/natural foods, you need to plan your diet carefully. You can’t just eat leafy veggies as a vegan for example. Our body simply doesn’t produce everything it needs with just one or two food options like most creatures.

You just need to plan your one meal. It needs to contain everything you need. If you’re going OMAD and natural food, I’d suggest to take a multivitamin. It would be one of the few cases where you actually need a vitamin supplement.

Answer

I do think that our body has a difficult time processing all the food we eat in a small window and excess food gets processed into cholesterol.

I wonder if your fiber intake is down and your body isn’t passing most of the cholesterol out?

Talk to your doctor. Mine was very encouraging with intermittent fasting. ESP when he saw my logs and progress.

Answer

Same. Mine went up a bit. Not a ton but I look at it this way; I’m going to lose the weight and also work on better eating habits. Once I get down to my goal weight I’m going to open up my eating window to a good 16/8 and focus on mostly plant based meals and closely watch sat fat intake.
