I want to do a 3 day fast for the benefits of kicking autophagy into motion but I’m also very used to doing some form of exercise every day. To that end, if I were to drink a protein shake that has 220 calories in it but my workout easily hits 300 calories does the fast still give you the same benefits or would I be better off just not exercising and eating the shake for 72 hours?
It doesn’t work like that. If you break your fast, thats it. If you want the benefits of an extended fast, you need to do it straight.
If you want to work out, just work out. If your new to extended fasts, you may way to take it easy. I have a high level of fitness but will get lightheaded if I push too hard when I’m +36 hours into it.
You can certainly fast and do ‘some form of exercise’ every day while on your fast, there is no problem at all with that. I wouldn’t try to break a best time ever on a 2-mile run or lift a new personal record on the dead lift, but anything else would work just fine.
I ran 3 miles today and I’ve been fasting 24 hours. I like to run around the 18 hour mark, does increase my hunger a bit but I am just doing rolling 40:8 so mind over matter gets me though the evening hours.
Have you tried working out in a fasted state? You can probably still work out and skip the protein shake
It’s all abut insulin. As soon as you eat your insulin rises from pancreas secretions. If your fasting you maintain glucose in the blood by the liver breaking down fat, turning it into ketones and in turn producing another kind of insulin which keeps your blood glucose at the required level. As soon as you eat regardless of exercise you will stop autophagy and kick the pancreas into gear again. Hope this helps.
