62/f/210lbs - Update

I had been working hard doing 18/6-20/4s and gaining weight!! So upsetting- saw doctor and was diagnosed Type 2, lost my shit as I had been working so hard to avoid this. He cut back my fasting to 16/8s because I had been getting so hungry I was over eating. So a week later I am feeling much better, sugars are lower ( not perfect) and I am embracing a keto diet.

Don’t despair. It seems like failure but it’s not. It’s manageable if not reversible.

I’m your age and type 2 as of a couple of years ago. I had the same reaction to it as you. I flirted with it my whole life— strong family history plus being 40-60 lbs overweight— despite being only 15 lbs overweight. Getting old sucks. lol I suppose I’m lucky I avoided it as long as I did.

I find if I eat fewer carbs at night and move around for at least 20 minutes, my blood sugar is good. If I don’t, it’s not. Volume of food matters too.

The good thing is that it’s manageable if not reversible. My mother was type 2 most of her adult life but lost a lot of weight 8 years ago, at 79, and hasn’t had high sugars since. She doesn’t eat a lot but it’s a high carb diet.

It takes a bit of experimenting/trial and error to see what works with you. I think you’ll find good success with a Ketoish diet. Personally I do mostly proteins, natural fats, and minimal carbs. I cannot do IF alone without being strict with my macros and avoiding all sugar and processed carbs, I’ll gain weight otherwise. My body is excellent at sucking up the carbs and turning it into fat lol. Any carbs I do eat are in the form of veggies and fruits. My last A1C was 4.5%, I used to be borderline 5.7-5.8 at my peak weight. Once you’re body is used to just the proteins and fats, you’ll find yourself being less hungry. I routinely do ADF and extended fasts of 48+ hours relatively easy. Key is don’t give up and get discouraged, its a process and it does work!
