I’m reading mixed things about creamer in coffee during a fast.

Hey everyone! I’ve read through this sub’s wiki/faq and understood that anything with calories essentially breaks a fast. Then I listened to a video by Dr Fung that having some cream in coffee is ok during a fast? I use a non-dairy sugar-free creamer (international delight) and I always measure out 2 level tablespoons in my coffee, so it’s a total of 40 calories. My gut is telling me this will stop my body from reaching autophagy but I’d love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

I believe Dr. Fung mentioned it’s ok to have minimal creamer if that means better compliance as for completing the fast. But in his book he details that all food can spike insulin including creamer and artificial sugars, even stevia. Insulin is going to prompt your body’s hormones and make you want to eat. I thought I wouldn’t be able to do a fast without my morning coffee ritual. And then this fast I skipped it to see what would happen and WOW - game changer. I was also drinking diet soda in the afternoon which I’ve now eliminated. I’m strictly doing water only plus electrolytes. I’ve had very little hunger pains and currently on hour 40. This fast is way more sustainable and a lot less work. Now Autophagy… I can’t speak to that but I’m guessing it does stop.

We all have different views about this, Im on hr 39, I drink my coffee with a spoon of monk fruit and a splash of soy milk, I had 2 yesterday, mid day a matcha w soy milk. I walked 3 miles yesterday and Im about to walk another 3 right now. My view, exercise induces autophagy as well (that’s what I read) so, in my mind, splash of soy milk + exercise = Im good.

I think if you have very few calories and exercise afterwards it won’t make too much difference. If the “creamer” has artificial sugar in it though, this will create an insulin spike as well as interfering with gut flora so I’d be aware of that.
