Iron Deficiency

hi, I’m 24F 5’3 and 154lbs - i heard about this diet through a friend of mine who has had tremendous results and so I wanted to check it out.

I want to lose 30 lbs in the next 2 months using a mix of rolling 48s and 72s since my graduation is November 9th, the only problem is I’ve been diagnosed as iron deficient.

My doctor has instructed me to take 3 ferrous sulphate tablets a day for a few months to get my iron levels back to normal, will the supplements ruin my fast?

Answer

No, they won’t ruin your fast. This is my opinion, perhaps not that of many others here. There’s simply not enough caloric value in those tablets that it’s anything to worry about. At worst you’ll get a short “blip” where the body is in a slightly fed state and then it will go right back into a fasted state. It’s mostly about insulin levels. This is why a person can eat pure fat and still be in a fasted state; the fat won’t cause much of an insulin response, except they’re still consuming calories so they will hit a plateu of fat loss, so they remain catabolic. A few pills are unlikely to have an insulin response, and they also have hardly any calories, so any sort of fed state won’t last long if it even happens.

Answer

I had the same issue, I actually recovered way faster while taking ferrous sulphate 100mg twice a day in a fasted state. Sometimes i would get stomach cramps or feel nauseous, so i would eat cucumbers and the feeling go away. They are low caloric and tich in potassium so it wouldn’t interfere so much in your fast. Good luck and don’t miss any electrolytes !!

Answer

No supplements won’t ruin your fast. Be aware that iron is better absorbed when taken with something acidic like orange juice, but since orange juice has a ton of sugar (which I’m assuming you want to avoid) take the iron tablets with apple cider vinegar mixed with your water. Adding the vinegar to water is better for your teeth too. Good luck

Answer

Make sure you avoid dairy, antacids, calcium supplements and caffeine when taking iron supplements. They will decrease the absorption. Taking vitamin C will help with absorption. Good luck with your journey!
