How long is “a little while”? You can’t judge your longer term rate of loss on what you saw in the first month or so. It seems to me that a lot of people think they’re in a plateau, but what they’re really saying is “I’m sure I’m not losing as fast as I was.” but haven’t waited long enough to know if they’re still losing (at a slower rate) or actually in a plateau.

Any loss of half a pound to two pounds a week would be great over the long term. Think about what a one pound a week average loss would look like on the scale. You’d see your weight bounce all over and occasionally–every week or two–you’d see a new all-time low weight. Sometimes that drop can be dramatic, but that means you’ll likely go right back up higher and not see a new low again for a few weeks. No more instant gratification of seeing new lows on the scale a few times a week as proof that things are working.

What does a plateau really look like, then? Keeping a seven day moving average of weigh-ins can help determine if that average has stopped changing for a week or so. Another simple indicator would be not seeing a new low weight on the scale for several weeks.

Once there’s a plateau identified, you then have to decide if it warrants changing anything. Maybe not if the cause is some temporary issue that’s out of character and will work itself out. Maybe not if the cause is something that’s not going to change on it’s own for the medium term. There are worse things than maintaining one’s weight for awhile to focus on other priorities when the likely alternative was gaining weight.
