Will green, leafy vegetable type juice ruin/break a fast?

I am used to drinking plain water while fasting, and I’m thinking of adding green juice since I’m drinking the water anyway. But will this ruin/break my fast?

I’m talking spinach juice, kale juice, celery juice, lemon juice, lime juice, etc. nothing high in sugar like carrots.

What do you all think?

Answer

Yes. Any calorie intake is not fasting.

Doesn’t matter how “good” the calories are for you.

Some say that under 50 calories doesn’t count, but in reality, if you’re looking to benefit from the state of fasting, it’s not worth risking.

I only consume green / herbal tea or a plain black espresso while fasting - depending on my needs for that day.

If you’re struggling for energy, maybe try a zero calorie electrolyte tablet, which I have found effective for my jiu jitsu training in a fasted state.

Answer

While it does break your fast a little, there is such a thing as “juice fasting”…you can look it up. It’s considered more gentle compared to water fasting. You are moderating the strength the fast hits your body and slowing down the results compared to water only fasting. But the benefits are that maybe it makes fasting more tolerable or pleasant which may help you start or fast longer. In summary, nutrition builds new cells and fasting is about selectively taking a break from nutrition. But even not eating juice or food for 12 hours is considered a “fast” you can have a “break-fast” to start eating again. 12 hours won’t get deep autophagy but it is a break. Do what you feel is right to achieve your own goals.
