Did Angus Barbieri have a zero calorie fast? vs Optifast

Did Angus Barbieri’s 382 day fast involve any calories?https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2495396/pdf/postmedj00315-0056.pdf For some reason the “absolute fast” in the following weight loss program https://www.thepermanentejournal.org/issues/pdf-archives/132-obesity-problem-solution-or-both.html still involved 500 calories per day (using “Optifast 70” five times per day).

The first link makes no mention of Angus having protein (which contains calories) while Optifast contains a lot of protein apparently for muscle wastage.

Answer

No man if you read methods it says non caloric fluids only. Not sure where you’re seeing the protein drink. He would also go 37-48 days between shits lol so I highly doubt any actual calories were consumed (protein I believe will still trigger body to create some stool especially 5 drinks a day)

Answer

i’m sure i read at some point in his fast he started consuming nutritional yeast to get all the essential amino acids, but apart from that i don’t think he consumed anything else with substantial calories.

Answer

He lost 125 kg during the fast. Normal protein loss during a fast is about 60-70 grams/day, but is less in obese, amd slowly drops over time as the fast continues. If we estimate his protein loss at about 50 grams/day, he would have lost 19 kgs of protein, which is 15% of his total weight loss, and would seem quite reasonable.
