Let me start off by saying I’ve only done maybe 2 dozen shorter fasts, nothing over 48 hours. There are many much more experienced fasters than me and if you ever see a post where my option differs from theirs odds are good they are right.
My husband and I try to fast one day a week. One 24 hour fast to keep us in check. We react very differently to fasting. He sails through the first 24 hours with relative ease. Generally needs electrolytes by hour 12 and but other than that he’s fine. I drink electrolytes 3-4 times a day. It gets to where they taste Good. If I don’t have them I’ll start getting spacey, then shakey, sweaty, nauseous, and sometimes a headache.
Every body is different. You might be like my spouse and be fine with drinking your electrolytes about twice a day. You might be like me need a glass almost twice as often as him. You will need to listen to your body and what it is telling you. Listening to your body in a fast will let you get to know your body and what it’s capable of. You can ignore the part where it’s yelling for food.
You can also help your body not feel like it needs to scream at you for food by eating low carb 24-48 hours before you start your fast. This sets you up for success by flattening the insulin response roller coaster before you try to jump off it.
Good luck with your fasting and welcome to this community! If you have any questions please post to the board. You may end up with a few snarky comments, this is Reddit, but ultimately most people here do want others to succeed and will happily help you along.
Learned the hard way this week. My body did NOT handle the detox well after 2 weeks of going off the rails with the holidays. Goal was to do a 5 day fast and made it barely past 3 before I had to call it. I could deal with the overall feeling of rundown, but then I got dizzy, a terrible headache, and a bit of keto flu. Still overall pleased with making it 3 days but if you have to call it early remember it’s still an attempt. You’ll get em next time :)
