Does eating an egg break the fast?

It’s my third day of water fasting and I couldn’t resist the temptation of a fried egg. Did I break my fast?

Edit: I have not had anything else, not even bread.

Answer

Yes. Anything with calories will break a fast.

Also, bread would probably have been worse. It sounds like you’re confusing a ketogenic diet with fasting. Fasting means ingesting zero calories, which is why you can drink coffee. Anything that spikes your glucose levels will break your fast, hence, why you cannot ingest anything with calories.

Answer

Technically yes.

But as there is less than one gram of carbs, it won’t effect ketosis/fat burning to any significant level, if at all.

However, the protein will make autophagy drop back to baseline. Considering autophagy is is around peak after three days, it’s not that big of a deal as it will rise again over the next three days, maybe sooner as it was only one eggs worth of protein.

Also bear in mind that many people have great results with ‘rolling 72’s’ which is literally eating one meal once every three days, and they’re eating a full meal, not just one egg.

Answer

Most people think eating anything breaks a fast because the point of fasting is to not eat anything. Truthfully, anything over 50 calories breaks a fasted state because it alters your blood sugar and insulin levels. A single egg with absolutely nothing else is 80 calories. So yes, you broke your fast.
