Family dinner while fasting is the hardest part for me

The hardest thing I’ve found about doing extended fasts is cooking for my kids. We have 3 kids and I do almost all the cooking. (By choice, I enjoy cooking, and I work from home and have more flexibility to handle it.) I pack their lunches and cook their dinners, and it’s so hard to make and serve dinner without eating any of it. I take a lot of pride in my cooking, and love to Instagram it and share on FB.

when my almost 4 year old decides she only wants to eat half of her dinner, I’m used to finishing it off. (we only serve her a very small amount but half the time she still refuses to eat. That’s another topic all together. She basically only wants to eat cheese and a few veggies, so every night is a battle to get healthy food into her).

Anyway I’m so used to just finishing her food when she doesn’t eat because I hate to waste it. Dinner is the hardest thing, I hardly eat breakfast anyway, and I can easily skip lunch, it’s just the family dinner that I miss and struggle with.

I’m on day 4 of a planned 15 day fast. I put a roast on this morning for the family. Got home just now and had to immediately evacuate lol it smells so good! But seeing the scale move down every day feels better right now so I’ve gotta stick it out. I’m currently outside sipping on a La Croix water.

I am only IM, so I haven’t had to face that situation yet! But I am in almost the same position as you are family wise. I’m also fortunate that my kids are older so I was planning on not eating with them. My thought is if I ever make it to fasting is to prep dinners on Sunday and have them reheat them during the week. I don’t think I would have the strength to not eat.

When you have to throw away your four year olds food just think “a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips”. :) maybe that will make you feel a little better?

Answer

Feel you! I cook every night for my family also, and it’s hard to sit there watching everyone eat what I made and not also enjoy it. It’s easier when I make for them non-Keto food, but when it’s “allowed” and usually really interesting (Keto recipes!) I get sad. I’d like to think it doesn’t show though. As for waste, this is one of my big struggles, I grew up in a “finish your plate” family, and also a lot of competitive eating because of older siblings. The comments here and elsewhere on waste have been helpful and illuminating, but not always easy to put into practice.

Answer

Agreed. Even before we had kids, I was often not hungry at dinner time, and it was hard for me to sit with a “pretend” plate of food so I could still have that communal meal feeling with my husband.

What about shaved/crushed ice? Down with a bowl of that instead of food?

We have a dog that cleans up all the leftovers, so that takes care of leftovers in our house!

Answer

Yep. On day 3 of a fast right now. I was supposed to have company tomorrow so was going to break my fast at 96 hours, but company isn’t coming so if I feel good enough to extend it to 120 I will. I’m having different company on Friday for dinner and I’m doing all the cooking. I don’t want to explain to my friends why I’m not eating.
