First timer

I’ve been on keto 5 weeks and wasn’t losing weight like I expected so I decided to do a water fast. I had been intermittent fasting but just skipping breakfast so 17 hour fast daily. Since this is my first fast I decided to do a 3 day water fast. I added the electrolytes to avoid headache and fatigue. I am day 2 and it’s not as hard as I expected. How often can I fast in a month without causing muscle loss?

Answer

Fasting (unlike calorie restriction) does not oxidize muscle for energy. I have been fasting 20:4 for the past 50 days and have not lost any muscle. You can lift during your fast if you want to have some gains while your fasting the elevated human growth hormone in your body will help with this

Answer

Make sure to activate your muscles often during your fast. It isn’t so much the fasting that would result in muscle loss, rather, it is the lazy ‘take it easy and don’t spend much energy’ inducing effects of fasting that cause it.
