Answer

I’ve lost and regained weight twice after fasting.

The last time, I regained 40 pounds within a few months, and I wasn’t eating any more or differently than before I had lost the weight.

If you read the blog FireInABottle.net, there is some discussion about an enzyme called SCD1. SCD1 converts Saturated fat into unsaturated fat.

Among other things, fasting is said to increase the amount of SCD1 you have. So that as you fast, what have you do have in you becomes less and less Saturated.

Your body is really good at burning Saturated fat. It’s not as good at burning unsaturated fats. When you burn Saturated fat, a signalling molecule is released that tells your fat cells to ignore Insulin. Without the effect of Insulin, your fat cells stop getting fatter.

When you burn unsaturated fat, your fat cells are insulin sensitive. So that when you eat, your fat cells are pulling energy out of the blood stream in order to steal it. In that regards, your fat cells are collecting a portion of every meal that you eat, and storing it. This also makes you hungrier, because any calories your fat cells take is calories your muscles and brain and organs can use instead.

So the blog discusses ways to inhibit SCD1 activity (avoiding unsaturated fats as much as possible, drinking pu’er tea; taking berberine or metformin, or using a supplement called Sterculia oil).

Answer

This is part of where I’m curious.

If the idea is that fat cells contain water, and ketosis ramps up to supply water from fat, does water just go back to fat cells, or is the fat really gone?

Seasoned water faster, but DF is piquing my interest.

Answer

It’s all calories in vs calories out, if you’re eating more than you’re burning you are going to put the weight back on. If the scale is going up, move more, eat less. Stop worrying about a specific type of diet.

Move less, eat more = scale go up

Move more, eat less = scale go down

Move balanced, eat balanced = scale stay the same

Answer

Water weight? Most, actual fat is impossible to regain all with 1 refeed. The way weight doesn’t come off overnight is the same way weight doesn’t come back overnight. Of course if you eat like a pig you are going to gain it all back
