Is it okay to lose 1-2 pounds of weight everyday. I'm M16 6'0 (SW 250) (CW 233) (GW 160-170)

I use the fitness app and do a mixture of 16:8, OMAD 24-48 hour fasts and am working hard but the fitness app and a lot of websites said that I should be losing 1-2 a week but I’m losing a lot more than that. Is that okay?

Well for starters, it is not medically recommended for anyone under the age of 18 to be practicing intermittent fasting. As well as a rule of posting to this sub. There’s more to food than just calories and as your body is still developing it needs all that nutrition. If you still want to lose some weight focus on eating better overall and exercise. More whole foods with real ingredients and fewer pre-made processed things coming from boxes and the store.

As for the weight loss. Some rapid loss at the start is expected and losing day to day is about the overall trend not the amount lost any given day. But if you maintained 7-14 lbs a week that would be very unhealthy. Generally this would again mean that you’re probably not getting the nutrition you need and could end up deficient on certain vitamins and minerals. Also when you try to lose to fast the body will switch over to using more lean body mass instead of fat. So someone could still be losing weight but it’s not changing their body fat percentage as much and they are losing calorie burning muscle.

Answer

Realistically, it shouldn’t be possible for you to be losing 1-2 pounds per day. Using your height/weight numbers and plugging it into a formula, your base metabolic rate (the number of calories your body naturally burns in a day) is roughly 2300. A pound is 3500 calories, so if you were to eat nothing at all, you should not even be losing a pound a day, at least not without a considerable amount of physical activity. As an example, jogging for half an hour burns roughly 300 calories for the average person. So for you to lose a pound a day, you would need to not eat anything fpr a full day in addition to jogging for roughly 1.5-2 hours.

What you’re likely seeing is a loss in water weight, which is common during the initial phase of IF. Either that, or you’re weighing yourself at different points throughout the day which accounts for your weight fluctuating. Try weighing yourself first thing in the morning everyday for a week or two to get a more accurate weight. Throughout the week, my weight fluctuates around 10 pounds, so getting a weekly average gives a better idea of your true weight progress. Someone else in the comments said they lost 1-2 pounds everyday as well. Again, I think this is due to water weight.

Like someone else said as well, it is not recommended for people under 18 to be IFing; you should consult a medical professional before continuing. Good luck!

Answer

I did. I did that until I reached my goal weight. Now I am still doing it because every Monday morning I get up and weigh myself. If I am over my goal weight I go back on my diet until I get back to my goal weight. Usually Monday through Wednesday I lose 1- 3 lb a day. Plenty of people on here will probably tell you that is not okay. I am not a nutritionist but somehow I doubt the people telling you that is not okay are either. Probably to some degree it depends on how long you continue to do this for. If you lose that much for two or three weeks straight I don’t think it’s dangerous. But if you’re trying to lose 100 lb and so you’re losing that much weight each day for two months straight, well maybe.
