There are many different forms of fasting. There is the 16/8 diet, alternate day fasting, and more. One of the more extreme versions is called one-meal-a-day (OMAD for short). This diet consists of individuals eating one very calorie-dense meal daily.
You might be thinking that this sounds difficult, and you’re right, it is. However, strategies can be put in place to help your body adjust better while even amplifying the health benefits. One of those strategies is to also incorporate the ketogenic diet.
The ketogenic diet is a very low-carbohydrate, high fat diet. Many people who mix fasting with keto report feeling great and having numerous health benefits.
However, planning a very high-calorie meal that is also low in carbs and high in fat can get tricky! A good way to combat this is to develop a keto OMAD meal plan once a week to minimize any last-minute guesswork.

I’ve combined keto with intermittent fasting with great results, I’m sure it could work well with OMAD as well. Keto is by far the best way of eating for satiety, for me, so I feel like OMAD with keto would be more than doable, but making sure you’re getting enough of what you need to stay healthy, especially protein, is definitely something to stay mindful of. Remember that if you’re overweight, and trying to lose, your fat macro is not a goal that you have to hit for your health, like protein. Your body has plenty of that stored already it can use as fuel.
16/8, alternate-day fasting, OMAD, and other fasting approaches are not diets. A diet describes what to eat, whereas a fasting approach describes when to eat.
You can combine any fasting approach with any diet. Having OMAD with the ketogenic diet is a popular combination, and maximises weight loss during a given period of time.
OMAD + Keto must be extremely effective although it might not be for everyone. I wouldn’t think to recommend it to someone who doesn’t already have IF experience or someone who isn’t used to getting most of their nutrition from proteins and fats.
I think if someone who has never done IF or keto tried it they’d burn themselves out fast.
