Instead of watching YouTube videos and reading articles on Google, I want to be self-sufficient and knowledgeable enough to be able to formulate my own diet plans and workout routines.
What are the best books people have read or heard of?
It’s very hard to find unbiased books on nutrition. Just make sure you’re not buying one that caters to a specific diet such as vegan, keto, or carnivore. I really like the teachings of Layne Norton and Dr Andrew Huberman, not sure if they have books out or not though. I’d also be interested in hearing what books people recommend.
The Pleasure Trap, How Not to Die, How Not to Diet, Fit for Life, The China Study, SuperLife and The Perfect Health Diet are all books that I enjoyed and gave me a lot of info. A lot of them are plant/vegan based books but they still have tonnes of great information (some biased I’m sure). I still eat meat in moderation and always will, loads of great stuff in the books I mentioned though.
The Muscle and Strength Pyramid - Nutrition. As the previous commenter mentioned, stick with something evidence based and not a book based on a particular diet such as vegan, keto, etc. as almost all of it is bullshit and extremely biased.
All Stuart McRobert books. Brawn, beyond brawn.
Starting strength by Mark rippetoe.
Beyond built by Bob Paris.
High intensity training by Mike mentzer.
Bodybuilding nutrition by Franco columbu is very in depth.
These are just some that I have and have helped me along the way.
If you’re looking for the ultimate simplified manual on nutrition and lifelong vitality, look to Dr. Frank Lipman. His book, How to Be Well: The 6 Keys to a Happy and Healthy Life, offers clear and actionable advice to improve health and strengthen day-to-day well-being.
I browsed pubmed for articles regarding certain topics of interest and made sure to balance my opinion by looking for articles disagreeing with my beliefs as I went along. For instance, I would look into interventions for dislipidemia and when I started to develop an intuition for what is best to eat or avoid, I would look into why their negative side effects.
